چکیده

This study compares velar movements for nasal vowels and consonants; it investigates contextual nasalisation; and it provides new data on how nasalisation is affected by speech rate. Velar position is measured with an electromagnetic articulatograph (EMA) for two French speakers. Our results confirm that (i) nasal vowels are produced with a lower velum height than nasal consonants; (ii) the contrast between nasal and oral vowels is maintained in nasal context; (iii) velum height targets for nasal and oral segments show some overlap, especially sequences of nasal consonant + oral vowels or [l, ]; and (iv) nasal vowels have a relatively longer duration which is preserved under rapid speech rate.

Gestural overlap, place of articulation and speech rate - an x-ray investigation

This investigation deals with the production of consonant sequences in French, with particular focus on overlap of labial, apical, tongue-dorsum and velar gestures. X-ray and acoustic data are obtained for two speakers, at two speaking rates, normal-conversational and fast. Speech rate is varied in order to explore gestural overlapping possibilities, when places of articulation differ between p...

Interspeaker Variation in the Articulation of Nasal Vowels

The articulation of the four French nasal vowels and their oral counterparts has been investigated for four speakers, using magnetic resonance images of the three-dimensional oral and nasal tracts and the cross-sectional velar opening areas. The analysis suggests that the subjects’ anatomy in the oral and nasal tracts influences the articulation, with intersubject differences in both the vocal ...

The effect of high-variability training on the perception and production of French stops by German native speakers

We investigated the effect of high-variability training (HVT) on the production and perception of French bilabial voiced and voiceless stops by German native speakers. Stop consonants in the two languages differ with respect to several articulatory and acoustic features. German learners of French (Experiment Group) trained the perception of word-initial bilabial stops spoken by six French nativ...

French Learners Audio Corpus of German Speech (FLACGS)

The French Learners Audio Corpus of German Speech (FLACGS) was created to compare German speech production of German native speakers (GG) and French learners of German (FG) across three speech production tasks of increasing production complexity: repetition, reading and picture description. 40 speakers, 20 GG and 20 FG performed each of the three tasks, which in total leads to approximately 7h ...

Influences of tongue biomechanics on speech movements during the production of velar stop consonants: a modeling study.

This study explores the following hypothesis: forward looping movements of the tongue that are observed in VCV sequences are due partly to the anatomical arrangement of the tongue muscles, how they are used to produce a velar closure, and how the tongue interacts with the palate during consonantal closure. The study uses an anatomically based two-dimensional biomechanical tongue model. Tissue e...
